The healing effect of words has been known for a long time. By the 4th millennium BC, the ancient Egyptians wrote words on papyrus, dissolved them in liquid, and gave them to the sick as a medicine.
We all know the health benefits of meaningful writing. Like writing, poetry has been recognized as a great way to improve mental health.
The use of poetry for therapeutic purposes extends to primitive rites in which shamans sang poems for the welfare of an individual or tribe. Its use as a complementary treatment for mental disorders can be traced back to a Greek physician named Soranus in the 2nd century AD. Today, some therapists use reading or writing poetry to facilitate healing or promote personal growth in their patients.
