We have good news for bookworms. People who read 30 minutes a day live two years longer than those who don’t read at all. Those who read books live longer than those who read periodicals such as newspapers and magazines. Poet and Writer Levent Ağaoğlu gave the following information about the details of the meaningful research conducted at Yale University and published in the Journal Social Science & Medicine:

RESEARCH ON READING
Author-Poet Ağaoğlu talked about the data obtained as a result of examining the reading habits of 3 thousand 635 people aged 50 and over within the scope of the research. Ağaoğlu said the following about the research: “Participants were divided into three groups as those who read 3.5 hours a week or more, those who read up to 3.5 hours a week, and those who did not read at all, by controlling factors such as gender, race and education.
Researchers discovered that those who read more than 3.5 hours a week for up to 12 years were 23 percent less likely to die, and those who read up to 3.5 hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die. During the study, 33 percent of non-readers and 27 percent of readers died. Those who did not read books lived 85 months (7-8 years), while those who read books lived 108 months (9 years). In other words, reading a book provided a 23-month survival advantage. Meanwhile, 87 percent of those surveyed have read fiction.”
ATTENTION TO READ BOOKS
Ağaoğlu suggested that reading books should be preferred instead of newspapers and magazines; “Research links reading, rather than periodicals, to a longer life. Reading a book provides more benefits than reading a newspaper or magazine. This effect is due to the fact that books occupy the reader’s mind more, provide more cognitive benefits, and therefore extend lifespan.”
The researchers also note that study participants spent significantly more time reading periodicals than reading books, and recommend switching to books. In the future, the researchers plan to explore whether reading e-books and audiobooks has similar effects.”
