Sumer Place Names in India

Source: Atlas of Philosophy; Spaces and Ways of Thinking, Elmar Holenstein, Küre Publications, June 2015

Sumer is found as place name mostly in India. Sumerian was the first written language 5000 years ago. It was agglutinative language like Dravidian, Tamil and Turkic languages.

What is your idea about highest frequency of Sumer as place name in India?

Writing has started in Sumeria and philosophy has started in India by talkings without writing in deep past. And these civilisations seem to develop interactions via trade. While North India has Sumer prefixed place names, South India has similar language structures with Sumer.

India always reveals realities of brilliant times of humanity.

Sumer/Sumeriya as place name prefix in India

By Guest guest
 in The Hinduism Forum

I thought this would be an useful piece of info.

There are 63 place names in India with SUMER as prefix.

The names mostly occur only in Bihar, Uttarpradesh, Rajastan, Madhya Pradesh

and Meghalaya.

To cite a few:

  • Sumera, Sumer patti, Sumerpur,Sumeripatti, Sumerdih,etc in Bihar;
  • Sumer, Sumeri, Sumer pada, SUMERIYA etc in M.P;
  • Sumer garh, Sumer pura etc in Rajastan;
  • Sumer in Meghalaya; and Sumer, Sumeri, Sumeri patti, Sumer pur etc in U.P

Besides I have come across many Sumerian/ Mesopotomian and Babylonian place

names in different parts of India.

Turkish and Tamil Languages

Tamil Mother and Daughter in Coimbatore, Tamil Region in India

I just returned from a 15-day business trip in Tamil Nadu, India.

When I asked how to say  Turkish ANNE (mother) in Tamil, I learned that it was ANEY.
I asked how to say Turkish ANNEANNE (grandmother) and this time my curiosity grew when she said ANEY ANEY.

I also learned that the Tamils had moved south under the pressure of the Aryans. So, it must have been that while the Tamils were in the north of India, we were there (Hephthalites, Kushans), so our languages interacted.

Of course, there are many more things that interacted. (March 2017, Levent Ağaoğlu)

Indus Valley and Sumeria/Sumerians

The evolution of writing systems is also an important indicator for the disclosure of
migration routes. The migration routes extend far beyond Mesopotamia. Here is the map.

The symbolism of the sacred ibex can be followed in almost all of these regions, as a cultural indicator to the Central Asiatic origins. On several pots and broken pottery pieces from the Indus Valley and surrounding regions typical motifs of ibexes, gazelles and antelopes are found.

Sumer is a word I am not familiar with. From the list provided none of the places are in South India. My ear is familiar with the South Indian languages but Sumer does not ring a bell. The only word that comes closest in my opinion is Sumeru, often used as a name and sometimes used along with a suffix. (Santosh John, India)

Aråa/Āråa BŚS, in the general area of the Panjab, next to Parśu and Gandhåri. The
word is interesting as a possible reflex of Sumerian Aratta, (east of the Zagros mountains, apparently the land of lapis lazuli, i.e. Badaxšån, north of the Hindukush)

Samar

The name of the city Samarqand (ΪϨϗήϤγ) has etymology traced from the Sanskrit smarya – “meeting”, “place of meeting” [Мɚsson 1950: 157], the Avestan Zmar-kanta “hidden under ground”, or the Sogdian Smara-kanta “stone’city” [Tremblay 2004: 130-131]. In the 11th century it was thought that the name of the city comes from the Türkic Samizkand (ΪϨϛΰϤγ), which means “fat city” [Bir 1973: 471; MK I: 330].

Per the legend, Samarqand was named after its founder, a Yemen king Samar ibn Afriqish or Shamar ibn al-Harith [Kan: 240-241; MW: 53], or a Türkic khan by the name Samar (ήϤγ) [AT: 16]. On the European maps of the 13th century is mentioned the city Samarcha or Samarcan in Khazaria [Chekin 1989: 8-10].

The name of Samar (ήϤγ) or Samur (ήϤγ) during the Middle Ages also carried the river in the Western Urals [IFad: 66; Sho: 161], city Samur (ήϤγ) in Turkistan [HA: 88], the river (Samur) in Elburs mountains [Yaz: 1666], and the right tributary (Samar or Samur) of the river Selenga in Siberia [RD I: 176; Bak:107]. Name of this river (Samar/Samur), like the other rivers of this region (Yaik, Ijik, Idil, Ertish, etc.),most likely have Türkic origin.

The origin of this hydronym has etymology from the Türkic ethnonym Subar with phonetic variations Suar, Sumer, Samar, Savir, Sabir, Sibir, etc. [Zekiyev 2002: 425-432]. The
Ural-Altai peoples of the Middle Asia, Ural and Siberia have an ethnonym Saman/Shaman/Samai/Samar,with the origin traced to the southern regions, from where it was brought the Altai linguistic community in the extreme antiquity [Vasilevich 1965: 139-145].
