He wrote very important articles on Black Sea trade history, Ottoman-Russian relations, Caucasian migrations, and opium production. One of the pioneering studies on Ottoman Imp-America relations belongs to him. He has been working on Mehmed Akif Ersoy since the early 2000s.
By the way, not many people know: Üner Hoca is also the doctoral thesis teacher of Cemal Kafadar. He came to McGill after Niyazi Berkes and was the head of the Center for Islamic Studies for a long time. He played an important role at the head of the center during the period when the center opened to South East Asia.
While I was studying Islamic law at McGill between 1996-98, I became a student of Uner Hodja, and I received a lot of protection and help from him. In the meantime, we catalogued the Ottoman manuscripts collected by Niyazi Berkes with the funds he provided as the director of the center, with Adam Gacek, and published the catalogue.
